YOGA FOR PREGNANCY
POSTNATAL YOGA
Using the Birthlight method, these classes involve specially adapted yoga stretches, designed to create extra space in your abdomen for your growing child, as well as for strengthening your body in preparation for labour. The movements stimulate all systems of the body, to keep you and your baby in good health. Breathing techniques increase your breath depth to be sure of enough oxygen for you and your baby and to enable you to harness the relaxing and pain relieving effect of controlled breathing. The relaxation methods release tension and give you time to yourself to develop a heightened inner strength, important for a calm and intuitive birth experience. The Yoga lasts for 1 hour. Afterwards there is half an hour for tea and a chance to get to know the other pregnant women in the class. The classes are suitable to begin at any point between your fifteenth week of pregnancy and the day you give birth.

Gentle yoga classes, with your baby at your side, involving one hour of specially adapted yoga, including a relaxation session, followed by half an hour of tea and time to get to know other mums. The yoga is designed to help you begin to regain fitness, strengthen your pelvic floor muscles, and realign your spine. Also to help you to stay calm and focused for your motherhood. The classes will be informal and mother’s can feel comfortable feeding or comforting their babies at any point during the sessions.

BIRTH WORKSHOPS
These workshops are designed to enable women and their birth partners to practice for the big day. They will discuss the experience of birth and how birthing partners can provide support during labour.
The workshops will be practical as well as informative and will cover:
Positions and movements for all stages of labour including supported positions.
Breathing techniques to manage pain and to conserve energy.
Relaxation techniques for mother and birth partner.
The immediate post partum period.
Workshops are arranged throughout the year to suit the pregnant students. Please contact Jane if you would like to put your name down, (even if you haven't attended weekly classes).

Yoga Birthday Parties
Suitable for children aged 4 - 9 years old, our yoga birthday parties include yoga oriented games and stories that stimulate children's imaginations as well as providing a fun and healthy way to celebrate their birthdays.

Children's Yoga (2 - 7 years)
Yoga classes with a difference! In these yoga sessions, children are told exciting adventure stories during which they perform yoga postures which represent the characters, objects or animals in the story. They may fly on a magic carpet, surf down a mountain or float off in a hot air balloon. They might meet mermaids, dinosaurs and astronauts, swim with dolphins or sail in pirate ships. Fun yoga games and songs are often included. The sessions end with relaxation, using visualisation techniques and breathing. Children receive certificates at the end of each course to show which yoga postures they know.
Classes last for half an hour with time for a drink and a biscuit afterwards.
Refreshments are provided for adults too. Put your feet up in our relaxing reception room while the kids have fun in the class.

Children's Yoga (7 - 12 years)
These classes have been designed to bring the benefits of yoga to the older child. Yoga can restore and enhance their flexibility, strengthen their bodies and also offers a tranquil space in which they can learn to cope with their changing emotions at this point in their lives.

Aikido
A traditional martial art based on the ancient fighting systems of the Japanese Samurai.
Philosophically and technically aikido is purely defensive in nature. It is a powerful and effective method of self defense designed to control, pin or throw attackers ... but to do so without malicious, aggressive or violent intent.
Aikido does not rely on physical size or strength to be effective. Aikido employs body dynamics, movement and technique to exploit an aggressor's points of unbalance and weakness. Instead of using hard blocking techniques to meet an attacker's force head on, aikido favours a softer re-direction of attacks which turn an aggressor's own energies against themselves. Equally suited to men and women of all ages!

Sun Power Yoga
Sun Power Yoga is an eclectic mix of three traditional styles:
Dynamic Hatha - for alignment
Sivananda - for subtle mind and breath work
Ashtanga - for heat, flexibility, strength and stamina.
It is a dance-like moving form which tests the body and mind as it gradually works up to more difficult postures with the sun salutation as its frame.

Core Strength Vinyasa Yoga

The 1.5 hour classes are priced differently Sharon's class costs £7 for pay as you go or £33 for a six week term) Please note that Sharon only teaches during term time.
Russells class costs £7 pay as youg go or £60 for a 10 week block to be taken in 12 weeks.
Gentle Chair Yoga is suitable for older people and for those that for any other reason have found that they are less able to take part in an ordinary yoga class.
In Chair Yoga classes, students do not need to come down to the floor at any point during a class. The whole class is done either sitting in the chair or standing, with the option of using the chair to aid balancing.
The classes teach students to improve their posture and to encourage their body systems and organs to work more efficiently. Students learn how to use proper breathing for health and relaxation and there will always be time for quiet meditation at the end of a class.
Students often find that aches and pains can be relieved, sleep patterns improved, and stress levels reduced with regular yoga practice.

Pregnancy Yoga Teacher Training
This course teaches a range of adapted yoga poses to suit the various stages of pregnancy, along with movements and breathing techniques to use in labour.
The practices are explained with a comprehensive background of subtle anatomy and physiology of women during this time.
Theory and practice are blended for a deeper understanding of the beneficial effects of yoga at this special time in women's lives.
This course explores not only the physical aspects but also the emotional and spiritual changes which are part of the transition to motherhood.
Participants are invited to discover facets of yoga they may not have come across before, particularly in relation to deep pelvic muscles, pranayama, spinal alignment and self-nurture.
Course Structure
The full diploma consists of three stages...
Stage One is a four day intensive providing students with a thorough foundation of knowledge in which the three trimesters of pregnancy and the three stages of labour are covered with anatomy and physiology.
Stage Two is self practice and research over a period of at least six months (and up to a maximum of one year). During this time students set up their own classes and observe other teachers. Students need to document and analyse this practical work. In addition, students will have coursework to complete.
Stage Three is the diploma weekend. A two day course for the completion of the full diploma. This stage includes a detailed review of students' coursework and teaching experiences, followed by tuition on yoga applied to special ailments, yoga from the antenatal class to the labour ward, and yoga to help mothers who have experienced a difficult birth or postpartum. This stage is an excellent opportunity to discuss your experiences with your fellow trainees and share thoughts on what has worked in your classes and different ways to explain the various concepts of yoga for pregnancy.
Who can attend the course?
This course is suitable for qualified yoga teachers looking to expand their knowledge to the field of yoga with pregnant women and new mothers. It is also open to midwives, health visitors and childbirth educators with a sound yoga background.
Qualification gained
The qualification awarded will be a Diploma in Birthlight Yoga Teaching.
Your Tutor
Jane Collins is a fully qualified BWY and Sun Power Yoga Teacher and has been practicing yoga for more than 12 years. She has been teaching pre and postnatal yoga classes for the past five years, having trained with Francoise, and is passionate about its positive effects for women. Jane has a strong belief that a happy, comfortable and calm mother can have a more empowered and enjoyable pregnancy and labour and that this positively effects the rest of a woman's life, and her child's life, and in turn benefits the whole family and the people that surround that family. Motherhood is an extremely important role and as pregnancy yoga teachers we can provide some of the support that mothers need.
Course Costs
The cost for stage one's four day course is £500.
A deposit of £75 is required to secure your place. The remainder can be paid in instalments.
The cost for the diploma weekend is £290

Reception Room
Our reception room is quirky and cosy. We've painted the old stone walls and filled the room with comfortable seating, toys, books and magazines. There's a small kitchen with a counter top that doubles as a bar for the comedy nights! But every other day the counter holds a selection of delicious home baked cakes for sale from just 50p.
The Studio
The photo here doesn't do it justice. The studio is a lovely space.
It is large, 45' by 35', and suitable for a wide range of activities.
A beautiful, spacious, carpeted room which is fully equiped for yoga with mats, blankets, blocks, belts and exercise balls, and also for fitness classes, martial arts and gymnastics with top quality crash mats and children's gymnastics equipment.
We have about 80 chairs, several tables and even a stage. The possibilities are endless!

Escape is situated on Olde English Road, behind Monk Bar on Dale Road in Matlock. Once you have turned down Olde English Road the first right behind Monk Bar - follow the unmade road past Peakland Arts picture framers. Escape is the next unit on the right go past our double doors and go down the narrow alley to our main entrance. There is no Parking on Olde English Road.
Parking
Olde English Road Pay and Display Long Stay car park is just 2 minutes walk from Escape. If you are a Derbyshire Dales Resident and have a parking permit this is free before 11am and after 4pm. Derbyshire Dales District Council (DDDC) also offer and annual discount parking permit which might be useful if you use their car parks a lot.
Sainsbury's offer 2 hours free parking (no need to spend money instore) this is less than 10 minutes walk from Escape
Coop will refund up to 2 hours parking in the DDDC carpark on thier roof if you spend over £10 in store. Less then 10 minutes from Escape
Matlock Station Car Park is 5 minutes away and like Olde English Road is run by DDDC.
